These release notes address late-breaking issues and information about Windows® XP Service Pack 3 (SP3). Unless otherwise specified, these notes apply to all editions of Windows XP SP3.

Windows XP SP3 includes all previously released updates for the operating system. This update also includes a small number of new functionalities. For more information, see the Windows XP SP3 overview at the Microsoft Download Center (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=115773).

Internet Explorer

If you have installed Windows Internet Explorer® 7 or a beta version of Internet Explorer 8, and then install Windows XP SP3, you cannot uninstall Internet Explorer.

To avoid this, ensure Internet Explorer 7 or a beta version of Internet Explorer 8 is not installed before installing Windows XP SP3.

If you have already encountered this issue, uninstall Windows XP SP3, uninstall Internet Explorer, and then reinstall Windows XP SP3.

Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System

If you use Microsoft Dynamics™ Retail Management System (RMS) Store Operations or Microsoft Dynamics RMS Headquarters, you should not install this service pack without first installing the related hotfix when it is available.

Installing the service pack could cause the following: data loss in both the store and the Headquarters databases, Headquarters communications failure, loss of functionality, and applications that fail to respond or unexpectedly quit.

For more details, including information about the availability of the hotfix, see http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=117439.

Multilingual User Interface (MUI) Pack

On a computer that is running the English version of Windows XP SP3 with the Windows XP SP2 Multilingual User Interface (MUI) Pack, you can select a non-English language for the user interface (UI). However, text may appear in English in the UI instead of in the selected language. The English text may appear in lists, menus, dialog boxes, product Help, and other locations. This issue affects the following components:

  • Microsoft Management Console (MMC) 3.0
  • Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) 6.1
  • Network Access Protection (NAP)
  • Scripting binaries

To correct this issue, download the Multilingual User Interface Pack update for Windows XP SP3 at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=115847.

Remote Desktop Connection

If you have installed the prerelease version of Remote Desktop Client 6.1 (KB 937468), and then install Windows XP SP3, the desktop will continuously display the text "For testing purposes only. Build 2600.xp_sp2_gdr…", and you will not be able to uninstall KB 937468 using Add/Remove Programs.

To avoid this, uninstall KB 937468 before you install Windows XP SP3.

If you have already encountered this issue, follow these steps to remove the test certificate that is responsible for the text message being displayed.

To remove the test certificate
  1. Click Start, click Run, type certmgr.msc, and then press ENTER.

  2. In the list that appears, find and expand the Trusted Root Certification Authority folder.

  3. Within the Trusted Root Certification Authority folder, find and expand the Certificates folder.

  4. In the right pane, find and delete all entries named Microsoft Test Root Authority.

  5. Restart the computer.

Scripting

If you change the regional and language options to a different setting from those used when the service pack was installed, certain region-specific aspects of Visual Basic Scripting Edition (VBScript) (such as the DateValue() function) and Jscript (such as the toLocaleString method) will not function correctly. For example, such scripts will output date, currency, number, and time data in the incorrect format.

For more detailed information, including information about an available hotfix, see http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=116903.
